It is used as a long-term (maintenance) treatment to prevent or decrease wheezing and trouble breathing caused by asthma or ongoing lung disease (e.g. COPD emphysema). Controlling symptoms of breathing problems can decrease time lost from work or school.This medication does not work immediately and should not be used for sudden attacks of breathing trouble. But in the year that followed publication of the guidelines, the number of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in Quebec decreased 4.2 per cent, the study said, while increasing 6.5 per cent in other Canadian provinces. The trend persisted three years later.
